Phase 1: VISUAL LANGUAGE:
Mythmaker introduces students to large-scale free hand drawing, line, color, light and shadow, perspective, and various techniques in the use of pastels. The focus of the workshop is the development of a visual language to tell stories with pictures.
In each class a presentation is made by a storyteller or actor based on an existing Myth selected from a particular part of the world. The students depict the Myth or a character from it, in a visual language associated with that place or tradition. For example, An Australian story might be drawn in a style like traditional dot paintings, or a Celtic Myth might be depicted in a style like the illuminated manuscripts of the Book of Kells. In this way we unravel the stories of different world cultures, drawing attention to the common threads between all Mythological traditions. Our focus is the relationship between spoken word and visual storytelling. By the end of the workshop series the students invent their own mythological figure. They compose a storyline involving the character they have created and effectively invent their own Myth based on an outline drawn from existing legends.
Students are introduced to creative applications of digital photography, and computer technology. Using Photoshop imaging, graphic design, and page layout, a children 's book is created entirely by children. From artwork and narrative to photography, graphics and layout. The book is then printed and bound as a record of the program.
